It’s a 7 (out of 5) from both of us…
The reviews of this establishment left on Trip Advisor enabled me to plan my journey and stop here for a superb lunch. Thank you to all who contributed to this forum and got it spot on.
The menu is an extremely good one and doesn’t have the typical pub lunch time specials. What is does have is a mouth watering selection of starters, main courses and desserts. Although really tempting, we did not opt for any of the starters which averaged around £6 but we noticed the pate and gorgonzola soufflé and they both looked fabulous. We opted for the main courses of Penang fish curry and the roasted belly pork. What a great choice, we both thought it one of the best pub meals we have had in ages. The flavours of the ingredients (probably from local sources) could only be achieved from a very good chef, and were similar to the fancy dishes served up on TV’s masterchef.
The costs for main courses ranged from £11 up to £18 but fillet steaks may be a little more. We then opted for the stem ginger sticky toffee pudding and the white chocolate & pistachio which really completed food heaven at lunchtime.
A selection of 3 local real ales including Uley Bitter as well as a small range of ciders was nice to see and sample. The décor of the pub was clean and very warm & welcome, I particularly liked the background music. Staff were really pleasant and service was excellent. A decent car park is adjacent.
I recommend booking a table, the pub was quite busy and it appears the secret is out; that this place is a number 1 choice when a fabulous meal is called for.ChiefRN
Will & Kat, All of us had a wonderful time at the Badminton Horse Trials and loved having discovered the Royal Oak Pub.
It was the perfect place for all of us to unwind from the long days at the horse trials and the unexpected advantage of the pub’s close proximity to the Stone Farmhouse we rented.
Your hospitality, the cordial conversations and the relaxed country atmosphere, especially that table next to the fireplace, made all of us feel right at home. The meals were perfect, and the service was outstanding.
Thank you both and your staff for making us feel right at home.
All the best. We hope to see you in the not too distant future, maybe sooner.Dan
Lovely pub, warm welcome, great food – My wife and I are extremely grateful to our mobile app for pointing us in the direction of this absolute gem of a pub. It’s a beautiful stone-built pub in an attractive Cotswolds village, about 1 minute off the A46. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. The interior is cosy and comfortable. The food is absolutely brilliant.
We both agreed that the Salt & Pepper Squid with ponzu and chilli dips, fennel and white cabbage slaw was faultless. For mains, my wife had Herb Crusted Cod with parmesan risotto, baby leeks, lemon cream sauce and Parma ham crisp. I had Pan Fried Duck Breast with confit duck leg in a white cabbage parcel, potato fondant, red cabbage, parsnip crisp and a rich port sauce. Both dishes were perfectly executed, seasoned accurately and delicious. We both had the Chocolate Delice with coffee mocha ice cream, which was simply divine – a rich and decadent treat.
There is a very comprehensive range of local ales and ciders and a very good value wine list. The ale I had was excellent and my wife declared the Sauvignon as one of the best she has ever had.
Highly recommended. It’s a shame it’s not nearer to where we live, otherwise we would be regulars!Peter
First Class – We last visited this pub some 10 years ago when it was under a previous owner, and it was chilly and drab. It has been transformed by the new owners.
Ambience and decor is quaint, Cotswold, country pub – lots of natural stone and recently added panelling, which has been done sympathetically. Very welcoming with candles. A good balance between those dining and those simply drinking. Lots of locals and dog friendly. Toilets are tastefully decorated in Cotswold stone and scrupulously clean. Service is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, without being intrusive or obsequious.
The food is simply divine – well presented, appetizing and superbly cooked, using quality ingredients. The chef certainly knows his food and it was one of the best meals I have ever had – if not the best – within some 10 miles of where I live in Old Sodbury (our usual dining out radius). We had a shared ham hock salad starter, my wife had a superb duck breast and I had a venison steak with a pear in red wine reduction (heavenly). For dessert, we had a cheese board for two.
Price is average for the area, but surprisingly good value for the quality offered. Heartily recommended and we’ll be back soon.Phillip
Unexpectedly Brilliant – My girlfriend and I decided to take the A roads back to Cheltenham after visiting Westonbirt Arboretum and happened to stumble across this beauty. As a professional in the hospitality industry, I can say the service was absolutely faultless from the lady behind the bar which I might presume as the owner. Warm greeting on arrival, friendly, and follow up check throughout our meal.
I had the Italian sausage casserole with a generous serving of garlic bread. My girlfriend had the steak served with peppercorn sauce. Both meals were flavourful and fresh. The steak was cooked to perfection. Thank you Royal Oak for perhaps the BEST service and meal I’ve seen since being in the UK over the past two years. Will certainly be returningStephen
Delicious Sunday lunch, roast beef was cooked to perfection and as it should be. Cauliflower cheese to die for. My Yorkshire husband even rated your puds at 5 stars! We’ll be backCatherine
Went with my family for my daughters birthday, I had the grilled halloumi aubergine & croquettes which tasted heavenly, staff were really helpful in lighting birthday cake & singing and kids menu was great too, will definitely go back another day, didn’t know it was first of opening, well doneSophie
Just simply wonderful – We came here a year ago after visiting Westonbirt and are so pleased we returned. There were 5 of us, 3 adults and 2 children. The Royal Oak has recently undergone a renovation. The chef’s cooking is just simply wonderful. Two of us had the fish pie which is surely one of the best ever. The service was excellent. We really cannot recommend The Royal Oak too highlythe Waltons
