The Royal Oak 2 goal festival rounds off the Season

By Miles Underwood

The curtain fell on another fantastic season at the Beaufort Polo Club last Sunday. Its been another successful season, with Beaufort teams notching up wins in major tournaments as well as the Tomlinson brothers’s fantastic victory against Brazil for England on International day.

The now traditional finale to the Beaufort season was The Royal Oak 2 Goal Festival. The Festival – now in its fourth year – attracted and entry of six teams for the two day tournament and produced some attractive and entertaining polo, again highlighting the quality of low goal polo at the club. Apache were once again victorious overall, capping a fantastic season for them. Big thanks must go to Paul and Antonia Whitbread of the Royal Oak, who have sponsored the club’s 2 Goal programme throughout the season and whose support has been invaluable.

Big thanks aswell to the members, the players, the grooms and the volunteers that make polo at the club possible and to the Polo office and the grounds staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the season.

Royal Oak 2 Goal continues to impress as the Irish Teams dominate!

Royal Oak 2 Goal continues to impress as the Irish Teams dominate!

By Miles Underwood

A 2 goal fest was the order of the day at the Beaufort this weekend. 6 teams entered the ever popular 2 goal weekend tournament that provided some open running polo, skilled shot-making and great match craft. “2 goal at Beaufort is more like 4 goal at other clubs – it’s just so competitive” was a sentiment expressed by a number of players and fans over the weekend.

Neptune Group, consisting of the three Boyd brothers and determined 1 goaler Johann Spendier were drawn with Pete Baldwin’s Shibumi and Indubitable in the first American Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The group appeared to be between Shibumi and Indubitable, however Neptune – who were 2 goals down on handicap – used dogged determination and hard graft to put two wins together and land a place in the final. “Will wonders never cease?!” said a delighted Creighton Boyd after making the final “I don’t think anyone is more surprised to be in the Final than us!

In the other side of the draw, Harrison Clarke looked good against The Bees, only to get thumped 4 to a ½ by a determined Inglestone Farm side. Amazingly it would be the Bees who gave Inglestone their closest game of the weekend, Barney Wilson and FreddieHousewives choiceMeade having outstanding games and keeping the score to 3-2 and setting up an all Irish final on the Sunday.

Neptune (starting with a 1 ½ goal advantage on handicap) were out of the blocks quickly and a lightening downhill burst on Boundry ground took them to an early 2 ½ goal advantage. There advantage however was to be short-lived – Inglestone had been beaten, and beaten well by Neptune in their previous encounter 6 weeks previously, and Inglestone Principal Stephen Hutchinson was in no mood for a repeat – by half time Inglestone were up by 7 to 2 ½ and showed no signs of backing off. “The bad news for them is that were now on our best horses” said a beaming Stephen Hutchinson as her came out for the third chukka. Neptune had been given a rousing team talk by 5 goal Argentine Jacinto Crotto and came out for the third chukka aggressively, Johann Spendier man marking Max Hutchinson as if his life depended on it. Neptune were able to stem the Inglestone tide by sheer hard work and tight marking and leaked just one goal during the third chukka. Neptune had their opportunities but were unable to capitalise. Neptune continued to work hard in the final chukka however the Inglestone train just kept on rolling, and they added one more to make the score 9 to 2 ½ at the final hooter.

Paul Whitbread of the Royal Oak, Leighterton presented the prizes to the Finalists. “Our thanks again go to Paul and Antonia at the Royal Oak” Said Director of Polo Olly HughesTheir support of this hugely popular series of tournaments has been fantastic”.

In the Subsidiary Final, Harrison Clarke emerged triumphant against Indupitable and in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon, Shibumi beat Bees, 4 to 3 – tournament debutant Chris Walker not only scoring , but also making a match clinching backhand that preserved his teams lead late in the final chukka.

Sun Shines on “Super Sunday”!

Big crowds flock to a feast of Polo at The Beaufort….

By Miles Underwood

“The sun shone, the grounds were great, all the polo ran smoothly and pretty much to schedule” – Director of Polo Olly Hughes’ typically understated assessment of “Super Sunday” at the Beaufort Polo club – 6 matches played at 2, 12 and 18 goal level and featuring the finals of the Duke of Beaufort’s Cup (The final 18 goal Victor Ludorum of the season) and the climax of the hugely popular Royal Oak 2 goal tournament.

The Final of the Duke of Beaufort’s 18 goal was played on the IG Index No 1 ground in glorious conditions in front of a big crowd. Altamira – a team that included former 10 goal player Pepe Heguy and the hugely talented Gaston Laulhe had sealed their place in the final against a Beaufort quartet who had looked a fantastic proposition throughout the group stages. Altamira started with a half goal start (Olly Cudmore replacing Max Charlton and reducing the team’s overall handicap to 17) and after 5 chukkas of end to end polo were crowned champions, 9 ½ - 8. Opportunities were missed at both ends, Crotto for Beaufort in particular missing a 30 yard penalty with a half swing in the final chukka. Beaufort were disappointed to lose but were beaten by a better team on the day. “None of us played well” said Beaufort’s Olly Tuthill, “You need to play well at this level to win finals, and we didn’t”. In the Subsidiary, Laird beat Emlor convincingly 8-5.

Inglestone Farm (Winners of the Queen Mother trophy at Cirencester last Sunday) marched on in the Prince of Wales trophy, beating Paulo Garavelli’sMinotaurs” 7-6, putting themselves in great shape for their final group match against Los Locos on Wednesday.

In the Royal Oak 2 goal, Young Charlie Day and his Alderley team beat Harrison Clarke 6 – 3 ½ , the combination of powerful South African Shaun Brokenshaw and the in-form Caspar West proving decisive. The prizes were presented by Paul Whitbread of the Royal Oak, Leighterton – whose support of the 2 goal programme at Beaufort this season has been invaluable. In the subsidiary, Inglestone beat Supanova 9 – 5 ½ and a disappointing Chase Vodka side beat Beaufort in a scrappy affair for the wooden spoon.

THE ROYAL OAK, LEIGHTERTON SPONSORS BEAUFORT POLO CLUB 2 GOAL TOURNAMENT

The Royal Oak country inn and dining room, in the Gloucestershire village of Leighterton is delighted to announce the sponsorship of the Beaufort Polo Club's 2 Goal Tournament for the 2011 season.

The tournament will be called the Royal Oak, Leighterton 2 Goal Tournament which started on Saturday May 22nd. Tournaments will take place each month until the close of the season in September, culminating in the Royal Oak Leighterton 2 Goal Festival.

The Royal Oak is a new, first class dining pub, sitting within the village of Leighterton, just a few miles from the market town of Tetbury. After almost a year of renovation the pub opened it's doors in December and has been receiving rave reviews ever since.

The Beaufort Polo Club are very close neighbours of the Royal Oak and, after visiting the club last year, Paul & Antonia Whitbread, the new owners of the Royal Oak, thought it made great sense to help spread the word about their new venture by supporting an event at the polo club.

They said "we had a great day visiting the polo club, it's a wonderful day out and they share many of the same values that we have put into our business. It seemed like a good idea to team up with our neighbours at the Beaufort Polo Club and get some of the spectators to come and enjoy the hospitality on offer at the Royal Oak."

As well as supporting the 2 Goal tournament, Paul and Antonia are using it as an opportunity to raise some money for a good cause. The Royal Oak will donate £3 for each goal scored over the five tournaments to youth charity, The Prince's Trust. Paul & Antonia commented;

"We were looking for a charity to get involved with and it seemed to make sense to support the endeavours of another of our neighbours, the Prince of Wales. The Prince’s Trust does so much to help disadvantaged young people in Gloucestershire. Supporting such a great cause really adds to the excitement of the tournament."

Beaufort Polo Club’s Claire Tomlinson said “we’re delighted to have a local partner like the Royal Oak supporting and working with us this year. One of our key objectives is provide first class polo facilities for players and spectators alike, while at the same time engaging local people and businesses in the Club’s development.”
